In the introduction to The Path to Power, Robert Caro identifies a dark thread that runs through Johnson's life, "a hunger for power in its most naked form, for power not to improve the lives of others, but to manipulate and dominate them, to bend them to his will." As George Reedy puts it, "Sex to Johnson was part of the spoils of victory." Surprisingly, Caro says nary a word about the president's predatory sexual behavior. According to Robert Morrow, he had three children with two mistresses and a secretary.

Madeleine Duncan Brown was a mistress of Lyndon Johnson for 21 years and had a son with him named Steven Mark Brown in 1950. Madeleine mixed with the Texas elite and had many trysts with Lyndon Johnson over the years, including one at the Driskill Hotel in Austin, TX, on New Year's Eve 12/31/63.
Late in the evening of 12/31/63, just 6 weeks after the JFK assassination, Madeleine asked Lyndon Johnson:
"Lyndon, you know that a lot of people believe you had something to do with President Kennedy's assassination."

I read a biography years ago on LBJ. It focused a lot on his 'Great Society' agenda and not so much on the tabloid stuff. As Richard Nixon said in his memoirs about LBJ is that he never got the praise he deserved from the very people he helped.
LBJ was a fighter for the poor as well as the Civil Rights movement. He put the first black judge on the Supreme Court with the appointment of Thurgood Marshall. He also signed into law the first bills for Medicare and Medicaid.
As for his love life I don't believe it really defined all who he was. Some great presidents were womanizers. I don't believe it was all the fornicating that made them great. It may have pumped up their ego and left them satisfied for a little while but in the end it's really nothing to be proud of.
I don't believe LBJ was one of the architects of the Kennedy assassination. It's true that the Texas Oil Cartel was unhappy with him but so was the CIA and organized crime.
However, I do believe that LBJ had a good idea when the assassination was coming down.
