Memoir: Ballet and the Fake Fall of Communism

I would like to share my experiences of time spent in Russian-owned ballet studios over a period of years spanning the late eighties and nineties.

Every parent wants to encourage the passionate talent and interests of their children. When my youngest daughter was six, I enrolled her in a local suburban ballet school. Several weeks into the sessions, she would cry on the way home from class. I telephoned the ballet teacher. To my surprise she informed me that my daughter was very determined and talented and was frustrated so she suggested she move up to a class with nine-year-olds at a more appropriate level of  ability. Several years later she was auditioning for regional performances and by ten she was in a Russian ballet studio in the city. Here, she learned the Vaganova technique.

The Russian Ballet Master had been a member of the Kirov and the New York City Ballet. He took a personal interest in my daughter and we spent more and more time in the studios in the city, and we became close to the Russians, even traveling to other studios to give exhibitions to recruit new talent for the Company. My daughter delighted in the difficult yet beautiful roles she danced and the Bolshoi costumes that were brought over for her and the other dancers.


Both my husband and I spent long hours watching the dancers rehearse and take classes and  during that time we met a myriad of people. Accompanists who had previously been employed by the Bolshoi and the Kirov in the USSR. A very prominent Ukrainian woman would translate for me.  She explained that the one piano accompanist had her position due to membership in the Communist Party and that only Party members were able to get these good jobs in Russia. Superior ballerinas were passed over if they were not Party members.

One morning in 1989, I arrived early with my daughter and there was a group of Russian men in the office intently watching the news and laughing loudly. They were watching the 'coup" that was supposedly taking place in the Soviet Union. [i.e. the Communist uprising against Perestroika] When I asked what was so funny, the Russian Ballet Master told me that this was ,"Theater for the West". I looked puzzled so they explained that in Russia they have more mined gold than any country in the world but the problem was that there were no goods to buy. "The Russian Mafia and the KGB need an excuse to get out into the free world to spend this gold so they have come up with this plan."

As time went on, a flood of new students and professional ballet dancers came to the studios. Parents of some of the dancers told me that many Russians were moving to the city and that they had apartments, new cars but often no jobs. Most related that their children attended private Hebrew school as they considered the American public schools very inferior.

I asked if they were Jewish and some even laughed at me saying they would make the sign of the cross if it meant that they would be given the money by a Christian organization to come here, have an apartment and free private school.

The Ukrainians (Orthodox and Catholic ) would fume when they saw V do that mockingly. The Russian "Jews" who were not Jewish at all were the ones who said they would make the sign of the cross if they got free money, private school "Hebrew school" for free and were set up here in apartments. They came here funded by a big Jewish organization in DC (United Jewish Appeal?)...said they got thousands each to relocate here. I only knew one real Jewish family in the studios.....and they came here years earlier. Their son was exceptionally talented but his father insisted he pursue higher education too ....the father was an Engineer in Soviet Lithuainia and somehow they got out......but not the sceevy way the other fake "Jews" did using monies from DC after the "fall of Communism". These Communist atheists knew very well how to use our system. You have to wonder how many Jewish American families donated their money to help Jews escape Russia ..unknowingly bringing Communist atheists here. The newspapers said over 7000 families had relocated in the city from the former Soviet Union.


Now several months ago I read the story of Tom Fife, an American Engineer who participated in a collaborative effort with the Moscow Academy of Science shortly after the alleged fall of Communism in the early nineties. He relates the story of a dinner party prior to leaving Moscow wherein the Professor's wife, a dyed in the wool Party member bragged how " they" had selected a Black American who would be President. I also read many comments after his story from people who just did not believe he was now coming forward. Well I believe him and I will tell you why.

Because it is the experiences you hear and see in everyday life that stick in your mind especially when years later events prove them out. I have just read in 1991 to 1993, 200 tonnes of gold bullion disappeared from Russia and what happened to it is still not known.

She stated that he had given her the names of this Russian Professor and his wife and she found they had residences in both England and Moscow.

I could relate much more of our years with Soviet and former Soviet ballet dancers but suffice to say I am sure the Communist Party never dissolved nor did they leave their former ideologies. They just moved them here and to other parts of the world.

Lord Monckten said Greenpeace was taken over by the Communists (when they jumped over the wall" and that he knew the originator of Greenpeace and others who all left when the Communists took over.) One must ask oneself how was it that Gorbachev was so quickly given offices in the Presidio in SF for his Green Cross following the "sudden" fall of Communism. I wonder how many people read Putin's speeches printed in Pravda after 9/11? I did and was frightened to read how he gloated about the American economy headed for disaster. Why was the Reagan Administration so eager to partner with Russia in Science and Economics?

Who was it that Robert Hanssen stated he was 'loyal' to when he betrayed American secrets to the Soviets?  and who funded the fake " fall of Communism" and why?

Fortunately, Master Classes opened my daughter's own eyes and on the last day of the trip home she told me she decided to quit ballet. When I asked why she said that she felt an evil from V she could not express and her skin crawled when he touched her......"besides, my career would force me to teach neurotic would- be dancers who were Professors of Dance like the one who fell on the floor crying and holding my legs saying she wanted my body."

That's why it's important to make sure you are not painting everyone with the same brush.
Most Jews in former USSR had very little to do with the elite agenda; most were victims of it. It's our responsibility to distinguish between a regular average Jew(who has done nothing wrong) and someone who decided to sell themselves (such as Trotsky).

My Human Persona is shocked by this information, yet, all the time, in the back of my head, my Spiritual Self, has been aware of the strangeness of Putin, a former Head of KGB, being now a leader. It was a joke, all along, that Russian Communism was no more. And the joke has been on Humanity!

Yet, the U.S. has fallen under Socialism (Chavez aside), and there is no real difference between it and Communism. Both are repressive and take away the God-given rights of the Humanity.

As to the ballet in Russia, those famous ballets, I've always been consciously, aware it was all for the entertainment of the Overlords of this Planet. The little girls among the ":peasantry" are taken and trained, the hard way, for the delectation of the "Nobles." No girls of the "Nobiliity" enter the ballet, it is always the Commoners and the "peasantry." Pavlova, was one, herself, and she stated, in her autobiography, that ballet teachers have a free hand in using the stick on legs and arms to make sure the girls move right, for the ardous task of entertaining their "betters." And all the while, the Human females, suffer extreme pain,especially, in the calves of the legs and the feet. It is a painful profession, NOT a pleasure. Even, today, as one can observe with the tragedy of Michael Jackson. Yet, the prestige given to it (by the overlords) is such, that everyone flocks to it, as students and even the Commoners.

Now who can say that the West is not decadent? And that they have swallowed the lie, turning their military machine away from the Russian threat?

But the Bible tells us that the "King of the north" will be turned from the West to head South:

Carroll Quigley published his 1966 "Tragedy & Hope" which is Wall Street and the Bankers' announcement that their takeover was financially complete (i.e. Checkmate!) when they began their counter-culture wars (the drug and sexual revolutions) in the 60s. What remains is a spiritual struggle to collapse American beliefs. Candice Schultz is correct that the dissolution of the USSR in 1991 like the drama in Tiananmen Square in 1989 was theater for the West to believe that the Communist threat had abated. In reality nothing has changed except the puppet show. The ultimate power remains that of "the international financial coterie." We will have our 'puppet show' of class struggle, War on Terror, etc. while the international financial coterie live like sultans.

This script could have been written in Hollywood.

As a professional dancer, then teacher, and finally choreographe/director, I have constantly battled stereotypes, misconceptions, and so on. Strangely, among these stereotypes has been the issue of nationality within the dance world. [I am American, currently traveling.]

I have always admired and respected those Russian dancers and artists who epitomized the art, transcending all nationalities and other differences. Yet, at the same time, I have witnessed the growing exploitation of tradition, and its perversion.

Thanks to a grand tradition, strict training, a slew of defectors, and plain arrogance, the Russian dance community has moved into American dance like the Russian mafia moves around Red Square. The precedent was set early with the luminaries of the early Ballet Russe, and even before. Many of these dancers and choreographers - through history - deserve praise. Many do not.

America has always suffered from the "if its imported, its better" syndrome. Currently, almost all the stars of ABT (American Ballet Theater) are foreigners. And there are many in NYCB as well. Many of these star dancers had better training elsewhere than many American dancers. This is by design, of course.


They know very well that this 'life' was made possible by a system very different from the one they presumably escaped from. Even today, it is much the same, in many ways. Yet, by all accounts, they always seemed uninterested in the very things that assure the good life they seek to enjoy. They are, in a sense, like the ones who kill the goose that lays the golden egg.

By ignoring the obvious, by not learning what it is to be an American, by not learning FROM Americans, by insisting in only their way, by playing Machiavellian games to the extreme — all these things seem bent on only disrupting and dismantling what's left of a once strong 'system.' In the end, as a new variety of collectivism, not too dissimilar to the kind they sought to escape, rises; they stare into another Siberian Winter night... Cold, dark, and after the Fascist transference,... Communist.

As America slides quickly down into a new, amalgamated, carefully constructed sewer of Fascist-Communism, this story (to me) is incredibly and bitterly ironic — as is the post by Candice Schultz.

Again, I thank you for that (and many other) article(s). It helps put it all into an even clearer perspective.

Henry, half of my classmates are playing in the Kirov Ballet orchestra. I`m a graduate of St.Petersburg conservatory. I know about the theory that the perestroika was a big fake show for the West. I was there when Gorby was babbling about "the convergence of the 2 systems",this is how the dismantling of communism was sold to us. Only time will let us know the real truth. The only meaningful thing for us is to take care about our health by all means possible so we live to see the day when the ultimate truth is revealed to us.
